Kwame's GH₵300 Guess
Most Africans cannot tell you pinpoint how much they spend on transport weekly, its always a guess huh. Ask Kwame how much he spends on trotro and he'll tell you, "Maybe 300, 400 cedis a month."
Kwame lives around Madina road and works near Kaneshie. Every weekday morning, he enters trotro to Circle, changes to another one going to Kaneshie, and does the exact same journey back in the evening. He knows his rent offhead. He monitors his data bundles closely. But transport? That money just leaves his pocket in small notes and coins GH₵5 here, GH₵11 there and he never sits down to calculate it.
So let's do the math for him.
Taking two typical fares from the GPRTU schedule, one GH₵11 leg and one GH₵5.50 leg, Kwame's commute comes to GH₵16.50 going and coming. That is GH₵33 every single day. Multiply that by 22 working days, and you are looking at GH₵726 a month and that's even before you count weekend movement, rainy-day detours, or missing change.
Kwame guessed GH₵300. The real figure is more than double.
And those "small" losses? If the mate keeps 50 pesewas change twice a day because "change no dey", that's another GH₵22 a month gone just like that.

The Numbers Behind the Guess
Kwame isn't bad with money at all. Daily transport expenses are just easy to miss. The reality is that following the September 2026 GPRTU and GRTCC announcement, trotro fares went up by 8% with actual rates ranging between GH₵5.50 and GH₵36.80 for intra-city routes. On many routes, the ground fares even saw a 10% to 15% bump in practice. Around 80% of urban commuters feel this impact daily.
To put this in perspective, Ghana's national daily minimum wage sits at GH₵21.77, which comes to roughly GH₵588 a month over 27 working days. That means Kwame's monthly transport fare alone swallows more than an entire month's minimum wage earnings. Research from the Ghana Statistical Service and INTALInC shows transport takes up 7.3% of household cash spending making it the third-biggest expense after education and housing. For Accra's poorest 20%, two basic daily trips consume up to 60% of daily household income. Transport isn't a small expense. For many, it's one of the biggest items yet the least tracked.
See Every Cedi with the Trotro App
You can't manage what you don't track. The Trotro Android app brings total clarity to your daily transport spending through a set of practical features built for everyday commuters.
Know the fare before you board. Search your route to see the right station, every connection, and the official GPRTU fare for each leg. No long arguments with the mate, and no overpaying.
Pay via MoMo and keep your receipt. On trotros with the TrotroLive sticker, scan the QR code or type the 6-digit code, enter your fare, and authorize the Mobile Money prompt. Confirm your car and driver before paying and receive an instant digital receipt. Drivers get their full fare while you pay a standard 1.95% MoMo fee plus a small platform fee starting at GH₵0.10.
Track cash payments with location permissions. Even if you are not paying digitally and still prefer to use physical cash, TrotroLive still has you covered. By allowing location permissions at all times, the app automatically estimates your trips and daily movement costs based on your route history giving you an accurate picture of your cash spending without typing a thing.
Keep track of your total spending. Your trips and payments sum up automatically in the app, giving you a clear view of your weekly and monthly transport budget. Open your phone on Friday and see: "This week: GH₵165 across 10 trips. Busiest route: Madina–Circle." That is how you stay in control of your money.
Never miss your stop. Set a stop alarm and let the app notify you right before your destination so you can rest comfortably without worrying about overshooting your junction.
Works even without network. Download the map and nearby stations before setting off, and the app will keep running smoothly offline.
Your Data, Your Call
You remain in full control of your information. Location permissions can be toggled on or off anytime in your phone settings, and you can request data deletion whenever you wish.
